Within 10-15 minutes, you can find great drop-in spots on the South Toe River for fishing, tubing, and kayaking/canoeing. Small mountain towns like Spruce Pine or Burnsville are quick trips and have charming shopping and food districts. Make a day trip up to Roan Mountain or Linville Falls for great hiking, or to Asheville for great food, drink, shopping and many other diversions, not to mention the infamous Biltmore Estate.
